The basic policy of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is Democratic Socialism, i.e. the Middle Path. There are various personal and collective freedoms, which are fundamental in Democratic Socialism. We consider these freedoms as basic elements of Democracy. Freedom of thought and expression, freedom of association, religious freedom, exercise of franchise etc. are considered as personal freedom. Freedom from want, fear, illiteracy and diseases is termed as collective freedom. We also consider that government by a Parliament elected through the free franchise of the people, efficiency and impartiality in administration and the independence of the judiciary are fundamentals of Democracy.
The exertion of the full strength of the government for the well being of the people of the country and the affording of equal opportunities for everyone and the establishment thereby of a classless society are considered as socialist principles.
It is our belief that since the journey to socialism which is on the one hand a democratic society, is being made under a democratic institution, it is contrary to a totalitarian system, as it is systematically done without exerting force and in agreement with the views of the people, and on the other hand privileges enjoyed by a small group as a result of the democratic capitalism should be limited for the benefit of the people.
A third element should be included for these two-fold socio-democratic principles. They are religious and cultural reawakening and development.
